What is Antithetical?

Antithetical is a fun word that describes a pairing of opposites. In pillow design, a floral pillow would be antithetical to a striped pillow. The striped pillow is the opposite of the floral pillow, and they can make a beautiful pairing. Here at Hackner Home, we love describing designs as antithetical as we work to create beautiful pairings for our customers.

The Antithetical Collection is mostly divided into two categories: warm tones and cool tones. By combining these color tones, you can create a beautiful look that fits so many home styles.

Cool Tone Pillow Covers

Cool color tones are an old favorite at Hackner Home. These colors look beautiful with neutral and white rooms. We added a bunch of new styles for this Antithetical collection in cool tones. You can use these new pillow covers as a building block for an antithetical look or on their own and make a cool tone look in your space.

A mix of cool tones invokes the look of a snowy winter day. Throughout winter, the outside is filled with grays and dull browns. Snow covers the ground in white and the gray snow clouds fill the sky, while bare trees of a dull brown dot the landscape. These pillow covers are inspired by these colors. This part of winter is beautiful and brings the outside vibe into your home.

Warm Tone Pillow Covers

We don’t always carry a lot of warm tone pillow covers at Hackner Home, but we really wanted to bring in something different for this collection. The Antithetical collection highlights the way you can combine very different pillow covers into a nice look, so it was important to have some styles that are opposite some of our more classic looks. The great thing about these warm tone styles is that they pair so well with so many home styles and you can still have a neutral look with a mix of cool and warm tones. These warm tones also look beautiful on their own to create an inviting look during the cold of winter.

A beautiful aspect of winter is the warmth of being inside on a cold winter day. The gentle heat of a fire or the glow from a window on a dark winter night are examples of the unexpected joys of winter. The warm tones of the Antithetical Collection bring that unexpectedness to your decor by adding a depth of color to your designs. Combining these pillows with cool tone pillows creates a look reminiscent of the opposites of winter.

Making Antithetical Pairings

This collection makes pairing pillows into a formula. Here are some examples of pillows that have opposite styles that will look beautiful in your home. Use these guides to help you find your newest decor items.

This set of pillows combines similar patterns with different color tones. The warm tone pillow has a smaller pattern with a mustard yellow color, and that coordinates with the cool tone pillow that has a jute pick stitch, which is a close color to the mustard yellow. I like this pairing with a large Square Dance – Wheat pillow and a very small Pick Stitch – Blue pillow because that shows the contrast even better.
This set of pillows combines different pattern styles. The geometric pattern of the Gray Wool Windowpane pillow perfectly complements the floral-like pattern of the Beachy pillow cover. This pairing is much more neutral and the difference in the color tones is more subtle. This is a different take on antithetical pairings, but it still gives you a beautiful look.
This set of three pillow covers combines several antithetical pieces. The blue pillow has a distressed texture that contrasts with the smooth texture of the striped pillow cover. This one is a contrast to the patterned brown pillow cover, while both pillow covers are brown. This is antithetical to the blue color, which combines the different color tones of winter.
