Building our Studio: Doors

Okay, I get it. The title “Doors” might not seem so exciting. I actually really love doors. A door is an awesome statement piece and is really important to the look and feel of a space. I worked really hard to find the perfect doors for the Hackner Home studio shop. Follow along on our journey with door installation and delivery. Keep checking back for more updates!

Unloading

The lovely workers from Cleveland Lumber unload a set of doors from their truck.

We worked with a local lumber yard called Cleveland Lumber to design our doors. They delivered the doors the other day. After they deliver and install the doors, they paint them. I love that part of wooden doors. You have more control of the color and you repaint them as time goes on.

This is a set of double doors to go in the doorway to the left (not pictured).

Inside the shop, we have doors to separate the front showroom area from the back workroom area and another door for the bathroom and various closets. We also replaced the front doors. The doors along the back wall are going to be an awesome statement piece for that large wall. The wall is white and the doors are going to be black, so they will stand out very well.

Installation

Here are the French doors installed. This space is going to be an office.

They had to then install each door or set of doors. There are a couple spaces that have double doors and a couple spaces that have single doors. Spaces like a bathroom only need a single door, while other spaces, like a larger workroom have a double door for more space. It also looks more inviting, in my opinion.

I love doors so much, so this is a lot more exciting for me than it seems. I can really see the space coming together now with doors.

Color

Our painter paints the doorframe to match the door.

We are also painting the doorframe black. This gives the door and doorframe a modern look. I love that modern style, so this is important to me. I like that the door and doorframe match. It gives it a simple and cohesive look.

Check out the painted door!

This door is not entirely complete, but it already looks amazing! It does not have a handle, you can see that if you look closely. The doorframe looks awesome black. It is a very different look, but I really like it.

Building Update: Paint & Design

We’re making so much progress on our building! Currently, we’re working on designing and painting. Designing is the fun part, and I’m excited to take you along on my design journey. Paint really changes the look of a space, so it is going to make such a big difference. Make sure to keep checking back for our latest building update.

We got some paint samples to see the color in the shop.

It is important to see the paint color in your actual room. The lighting makes all the difference. We went over to the shop one day to swatch the different paint colors to make sure we liked them. It was definitely a family affair.

We needed so much paint to cover that space. It’s a good thing we have a van!

We went as a family to the Sherwin-Williams store to pick up the paint. This shop is a big paint job, so we needed a lot. It is still surprising to me that we need how much paint we need. Our building is pretty large, and we have to paint all the walls and the ceiling with this paint.

I’m so grateful for my family for helping out with the business and the new shop.

I’m so excited about the paint. It is going to make such a difference in the building. This is the first step in the design process that we are able to see in the actual shop. We’re also painting the exterior, so stay tuned for that update as well.

It might not look exciting, but this is a huge step towards opening up the shop! I cannot wait.

The design process.

I love this part. I take inspiration from different shops around the world to try to create a space that is bright and inviting. It needs to be bright so that you can see the beautiful pillows, and I want it to be inviting so that you feel at home as you shop around and design your space. I picked a white paint color so the pillows will pop next to it.

I love these deep blues and dark tones with natural wood and brass. This is a little taste of my inspirations for the shop design.

Over the last year, I searched for inspiration online and in the places around me. I have so many pictures saved of different paint colors and cabinet designs. I’m sharing a couple of my ideas so that you can get an idea of what the shop is going to look like.

Color is so important. The color of the shop walls and decor will help create the mood of the space and make the shop recognizable. I love blues because they are comforting and make you feel at home. This is important in a home goods store because you feel comfort as you shop for things for your bedroom or living room. I also love simple designs that make statement pieces pop.

Next up, we’re getting doors. I love doors, so this is an exciting one for me. They are going to pop on the white walls and the exterior. We worked hard designing the doors with local woodworkers, so I’m even more excited to feature them in my shop.

Keep checking back to see more updates! The store is coming along and is going to be an awesome addition to our business. Thank you for all your support in making this possible.

Building Update

Come check out our shop in Shelby, NC.

Over the last year, we began renovations on an old building in Shelby, NC. This building will give us more space to work and sew pillow covers and dog bedding, which will help us serve you better. We will also have a showroom and shop so you can see our products in action. This is an exciting project. We’re growing and expanding, and we want to take you along on the journey. Follow the building process here on our blog where we will post our latest building update regularly.

The “Before”

Before we purchased the building, it was a formalwear shop owned by a local couple. They sold prom and wedding dresses and rented tuxes. The front room was a shop where people could browse the dresses, and the back was storage for the rental tuxes.

Check out the purple carpet! That brings back some memories.

Shortly after the purchase, we ran into a problem. A storm hit during the roof repair and flooded the building. Lost that purple carpet. Unfortunate. This storm meant we needed to gut the building and start over. It gave us the opportunity to be more creative and design the shop to fit our needs and style.

Rebuilding

After we removed the water and gutted the building, we had to start from scratch rebuilding the shop. Most recently, we installed new windows in the front, insulation, drywall, and wood paneling. The new black-pane windows modernized this mid-century building and look so nice. I can’t wait to design beautiful window displays to show off our pillows in these windows! It will help bring people into the store when they drive by.

New windows installed and looking great.
Here is one of the side windows from the inside. They also installed insulation before the drywall. It may not seem exciting, but it is an important step in getting the shop ready.
This is the back wall of the shop. The wood paneling is going to look so modern and beautiful in the shop. I’m so excited about it.
The drywall really makes it look more complete. It is starting to look like an actual room.

Keep checking back for more building updates! We’re working on the building all the time and will continue to regularly update you on the progress. The Hackner team is so excited to open this shop and give you a place to shop and design your perfect home.

We also post updates on Instagram, usually on our stories. Be sure to keep up with us there for the most recent updates.
